Kioni

Kioni is one of the most remote seaside villages of Ithaca, but the arrival to it compensates the visitor, not only because of the excellent routes that lead to it, but also because of its unique beauty.

The village nestles in the depth of a bay and the resistance of its buildings to the earthquakes that hit the area over time has preserved its picturesqueness and its harmonious relationship with the lush natural environment. The settlement has been classified as a preservable, as some of its buildings date back to the 16th century, and were built by residents of the mountain village of Anogi, and in the surviving buildings the influence of the Venetians and the English people is evident. There are still the remnants of the house that lived the great hero of the Greek revolution Georgios Karaiskakis.

The village spreads amphitheatrically in the green landscape from Rachi to its protected harbor, which is a popular tourist boat anchorage. As in many other hills of Ithaca, at the entrance of the village there are three stone windmills that were used to grind grains until the beginning of the 20th century. As for the beaches, the area has many small and large beaches accessible either by car or boat rentals. In addition, the village has three historic temples: Agios Nikolaos in Mavronas, Evangelistria and Agios Ioannis Lambardiaris, where we find wonderful hagiographies and wooden carved temples.

Kioni celebrates on the 20th of July, when the beach of Saint Elias the prophet is celebrated whose chapel is on the cape outside the village. This is one of the greatest cultural events of the summer, the Slap Back in the Face. This is a weekend in early August full of quality live music that attracts people from all over the Ionian Islands.
