Xi beach- Vardianoi Island
Xi is one of the most unusual beaches of Kefalonia and one of the most strange in the world as it has recently chosen a great travel magazine! The bizarre facts are already starting from its name due to the Greek letter Xi as its shape resembles that. The second bizarre fact is the red color of the sand that when the sun sets becomes particularly intense! Its third feature is that it also has clay, which is ideal to make a nice natural spa for cleansing and tightening the skin. Finally, the whole of the red sand with the whitewashed clay cliffs and the blue sea creates a colorful feast that gives the landscape an eerie sense!
Access to the beach is very easy from asphalt road and comfortable parking, the orientation is lean and the water is shallow and very safe for children. Xi has been awarded the Blue Flag and as it is organized beach offering amenities as umbrellas, deck chairs, beach bar, restaurants, as well as the possibility of water sports (Jet Ski, water ski, parachute etc.)
Outside the bay, the visitor from Xi has views of an uninhabited complex of two arid and rocky islands, Vardiani and Paranisi. In the antiquity, Vardiani were called Letoa, probably from an altar dedicated to Leto. Today’s name Vardiani is probably due to the Italian word “guardiano” which means guardian and guard, due to the location of the island and some outpost that may have existed there for protection against pirates. However, in the 13th century, in the area of Paliki opposite the Vardiani, the landlord of the landowner Vardiani is recorded, therefore the name of the island may be due to him. Still, there is the theory that in Vardiani Apostle Paul shipwrecked in 59 AD. as he was going to Rome. In Vardiani Islands during the British occupation, Napier built a towering 34 meter high lighthouse, which was destroyed in 1942. Today, a smaller lighthouse is in its place. In the 17th century, in Vardiani, there were built temples of the Virgin Mary of Evangelistria, ruins of which exist until today, and after the earthquakes of 1953 a small temple was constructed. Touristic boats often take excursions to Vardiani Island, where one can admire the wild face of the Ionian Sea.
