Radical’s Column / Monuments of National Resistance
The Radical’s movement had a bourgeois-democratic and national liberation character, as it opposed the English occupation and claimed the union of the Ionian Islands with Greece, while being inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution (freedom, equality, fraternity). The party of the Radicals was the first party that was created in modern Greece: it was founded in 1848 in the USA and dissolved immediately after the union of the Ionian islands with Greece in 1864.
Radicals raged the people against Britain, which responded with persecution, imprisonment, exile, and newspaper closure. While the proponents Elias Zervos and Joseph Mompheratos were in exile and virtually the movement was in the process of disintegration, Constantine Lombard, who confined the claims exclusively to the union with Greece, led by the leader, led to the split of the movement in 1862 into old and new radicals. However, the views of the Ionian Radicals have overall influenced the shaping of Greek political life and laid the foundations of socialism in the country.
The column of the Radicals honors the memory of all those who with their work struggled to overthrow the yoke of the occupation and conquer freedom on the basis of equality. It is the work of the great Lixurian sculptor George Bonanou, who was painted at the expense of the Brotherhood of Kefalonians and Ithacans in Piraeus, and its revelations were made on May 21 1934, 70 years after the Union.
In addition to the column of the Radicals, in the area of ??Argostoli we find other monuments that concern the national resistance during the Second World War. In an adjacent area where there is now a playground, where there were former prisons, there is a plaque in memory of six resistance members, members of EAM(National Liberation Front/ Ethniko Apeleftherotiko Metopo) and EPON(United Panhellenic Organization of Youth/ Eniea Panelladiki Organosi Neon), executed by the Germans in 1943 and 1944. Continuing on the same path to its nature Lassi, we find in the area of Viniaries another monument in memory of eleven fighters that were executed here in 1944.
