Myrtos
Myrtos is one of the most famous and beautiful beaches not only of Kefalonia but also of Greece! Its length is about 800 meters and at the end it has a cave while it is covered with thin white shadows. As it is surrounded by cliffs and mountain ranges, its view from above is exciting. There are two points where Myrtos looks just as well from the highway that connects Fiskardo with Argostoli both before and after the village of Divarata where the road to the beach starts. The sea near the beach has the characteristic of Ionian turquoise color, but as there are currents, one can say that he does not see the same mountain twice when the color of the water is constantly changing! The orientation of the beach is west, so from here the visitor can enjoy a unique sunset.
Unfortunately, the wild beauty of Myrtos is not without a price. Previously the beach was organized and repeatedly received blue spots and international distinctions. However with the earthquakes of 2014 there were landslides that destroyed the part of the road from where there is the most beautiful view of the beach. The construction of a bridge so that the road could be accessed again took three years. The new bridge was launched in the summer of 2017 and is a miracle of engineering, as the sandhills on which it is supported allow for up to half a mile so that it absorbs possible future vibrations. So today, the visitor can again enjoy the view from same point while being totally safe.
In 2017 it was set by law that sun loungers, umbrellas and canteens in Myrtos are forbidden, as well as car parking, as this beach is a rare species of protected bats. Swimming is not forbidden, but the visitor should take care of it for shade. Despite the inconvenience, the beach compensates the visitor who feels he is in the wild unspoiled nature, without extensive human interventions that alter the exceptional natural landscape. We point out that because of sea currents swimming in the area can be dangerous, so swimmers are important to be careful and to take appropriate measures especially for children. The morning hours are more suitable for swimming in Myrtos, as usually the sea is quieter, while in the afternoons there is a wind that causes a wave.
