Lithostroto

Along the busy Lithostroto and the parallel road Sitemboron Street, you can find the city’s shopping center. From the Courts, it reaches up to Devosetou Street, that is, the extension of the bridge, while for about 800 meters and up to the height of the Kambana Square through which it passes, it is pedestrianized.

In its original design it was called Foros, but was then named Lithostroto since it was one of the first streets that was paved with the proclamation of Argostoli as the capital of the island in 1757. From the beginning of its creation, Lithostroto developed commercial activity. Almost throughout its length as well as its vertical streets, there are shops selling clothes, shoes, home and gift items and much more, as well as pretty coffee shops. At the very beginning, very close to the Courts, there is the church of Saint Spyridon, which is worth visiting to see its wonderful gold-plated wood-carved icon screen. Then we find the post office and after the Catholic church of St. Nicholas. Very close to the vertical narrow is the traditional shop of “Sesulas”, which every Tuesday night is the meeting point of the local serenade singers. Thus, commercial activity meets cultural and Lithostroto participates actively in the celebrations and customs of the place. Especially, Easter revives the custom of the boots that break as they are thrown out of balconies, while on New Year’s Eve the passers-by are sprinkled with … cologne in order for them to find the new season perfumed!

As you make your walk in Lytostroto, in addition to your shopping, do not forget to taste brittles, mandolata and mandoles, as well as some other traditional pastries!
