Kourkoumelata – Vergoti Foundation
Kourkoumelata is an unusual village not only for Kefalonia but also for the whole of Greece as it is a unique sight! It all began with the tragic cause of the earthquakes of 1953, which were flattened by so many others and the village of Kourkoumelata. At that time, the very wealthy co-operative who had operations abroad, George R. Vergotis, sent a telegram to his villagers on the island with a message of hope: “Do not worry about your homes. We will rebuild our village better, much better than before. ” And it really happened! At the expense of Vergoti, after the completion of an integrated urban plan, 55 houses were built in 3 sizes and a variety of designs, a church, a primary school (adjacent to Metaxata), a stadium and a stadium, a medical station, a gendarmerie section, a community office, which also operated as a small grocery store and call centre and still works today. At the same time, infrastructure projects were made pioneering for the time, such as an asphalted road network linking nearby villages, drilling and water supply networks for free water supply, and electric generators for free power.
However, apart from the above works, another imposing building of neoclassical style was also erected, the Cultural and Cultural Center, which is the seat of the Georgiou & Maris Vergoti Foundation. This building is 570 meters wide and its main room has a capacity of 280 people. It is used to host events such as conferences, lectures and presentations, musical and folklore events, as well as educational and other activities. The Foundation also develops charitable work, in particular through grants and scholarships.
Thus, the village is intimately linked to the family of Vergoti, whose successive generations, despite having earned a great financial overseas, never ceased to be active members of the local community with a great offer and love to their fellow human beings. So explore the peaceful and beautiful Kourkoumelata and then enjoy the view of the sea from their “Viennese” café!
