Kefalos Theater

Kefalos Municipal Theater dominates with its imposing size the center of Argostoli. Enlightened and open almost every day, it is a major focus of culture not only on the city of Argostoli but also on the whole Kefalonia. It is located in the place where the old homonymous theater was, which was erected in 1858 during the British domination, was inaugurated with the opera “Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi. In that theater were hosted famous operettas and Italian melodramas of the era, which were enjoyed not only by the aristocracy but also by simple people. After the Asia catastrophe, the theater was shut down because refugees were accommodated in there. In 1943, during the Second World War the building was bombed and burned, while the deathblow came from the earthquakes of 1953. The current neoclassical style building began to be built in 1980 and was inaugurated in 1994 with the presence of Melina Merkouri and was renovated recently.

Today, the theater, apart from its central stage on the first floor, which is professional and high-capacity, with top loge, foyer and canteen, boasts a second large ground floor event, dressing rooms and offices in which the cultural business of the Municipality of Kefalonia is housed. It hosts numerous events throughout the year, theatrical performances of local and big theaters, cinema screenings, music and dance performances and choral meetings, art exhibitions, scientific conferences and much more. In addition to this are the meetings of the city council, as well as theater lessons for all ages.

In the small park in front of the theater, stands the statue of Peace, a bronze work of 1983 by the famous Kefalonian sculptor Memas Kalogrianatos. Just behind the theater is the Korgialenios Library and the Folklore Museum, right in front and on the side is the Archaeological Museum. Thus, in the heart of the city there is a building complex of civilization promotion in its various manifestations.
