Katelios

Katelios is the southernmost village of Kefalonia and spreads over a gentle plain at the edge of Ainos, from which rich streams descend with cool and crystal clear water. In fact, there are two settlements, the Upper that houses most of the residents’ homes and Kato Katelio, which is the beach, fish taverns and tourist accommodation. From Katelios there is a magnificent view of the Ionian Sea and Zakynthos, from and to which passengers and boats were transported in the past. There is even evidence that the area has been operating as a harbor since the Roman era.

The beach of Katelios is called Agia Varvara, surrounded by eucalyptus and conifers and has pebbles, fine blond sand and clear blue waters. Although it is organized, it has very easy access and it has umbrellas and lounges, there is no crowding, as is the case at the nearby Kaminia beach, named after the ceramic furnaces that existed here in the 19th century, from which they made tiles with raw material the abundant clay of the area. At the edge of Kaminia and towards the village of Ratzakli, the Munda beach begins with similar features and that, known as the caretta-caretta turtle nest.

For the protection of the turtle, a non-profit organization called “The Katelios Group”, which has its headquarters there, provides information to all concerned, organizes actions for environmental education, but also protects the nesting sites.

Katelios is a suitable destination for a peaceful, natural holiday as it offers a quiet environment with rich flora and fauna as well as very nice hiking trails to the surrounding villages. A visitor who wants to enjoy a more intense nightlife can go to the neighboring Skala that offers it. But what is ideal for Katelios is to enjoy the fresh fish that daily sailings bring to the seaside taverns!
