Iakovatios Library and Museum

The Typaldos-Iakovatos Public Central Library and the Museum is housed in the two-storied mansion of the Typaldos-Iakovatos family, built in 1866 and restored in 1984. It is a typical example of 19th century neoclassical architecture, while its magnificent large garden highlights even more the building. The ceilings of the interior are covered with elegant ceiling paintings. The building was declared a work of art by the Ministry of Culture in 1968.

The first reference to the family that built the mansion is made in documents of 1408. The Typaldos – Iakovatos brothers were distinguished for their achievements in letters science and the political life of their time. They owned a remarkable number of books, ancient objects and ecclesiastical icons, which along with family furniture and portraits, constituted the basis for the creation of a museum and one of the richest private libraries in the Ionian Islands. The children of the unique descendant of the family, Aikaterini Iakovatou – Toul, who performed her desire, donated the house and what it contained in the Greek state in 1963, when it began to function as a library and museum.

On the ground floor of the building is housed the lending Public Library of Lixouri, which has approximately 30,000 volumes of books and magazines published from the 16th century  since today, many of which are rare and scarce and cover a wide range of interests. The collection of the Library is continuously enriched with modern material.

On the upper floor there is a Museum, which displays relics of the Typaldos – Iakovatos family, personal family objects, furniture, ecclesiastical vestments, religious icons, Gospels, etc., and maintains an archive of the same family with very interesting material.

The courtyard was appropriately shaped and during the summer period various cultural events such as speeches, screenings, musical and theatrical events, exhibitions, etc. are being held there. Since the summer of 2017, the “Iakovateia” established a two-day cultural event with many themes.
