Frikes

Frikes is a small fishing village that seems to correspond to the homeric harbor of Rethros. The village was built in the 16th century, when the inhabitants of the surrounding mountain villages with the retreat of piracy descended to the sea to develop fishing and commercial activity.

By the beginning of the 20th century, it was a shipping and commercial center of northern Ithaca, and today it is the port that connects Ithaca with northern Kefalonia (Fiskardo) and Lefkada (Vasiliki and Nydri). To the right and left of the port of Frits we find two well-preserved windmills that resemble villas. The port has anchorage of tourist boats and basic tourist infrastructure. The existence of many wonderful beaches with easy access, white pebbles and trees reaching the bay in northern Ithaca makes Frikes a suitable base for exploration by car or by boat.

The visitor of Frikes can stay in one of the tourist lodgings of the village, eat in one of the beach restaurants and cafes, buy whatever is necessary from the mini-market, while in his walk he will meet the bust of the important Ithacan poet Lorenzo Mavili. The Frikes are celebrated on June 30, celebrating at the same time the Twelve Apostles with folklore music (played by traditional instruments), dances, food and wine are taking place and shared in feelings of joy and happiness; the feast usually lasts until dawn.
