Fiskardo

Fiskardo is not only the most famous village of Kefalonia but also one of the most famous all over Greece! Its exceptional location in the deep green bay as well as the fact that it was not significantly affected by the devastating earthquakes of 1953 made it a pole of attraction for both tourists traveling by road and for those who travel by boat. Fiskardo has full tourist infrastructure and offers to the visitor any service he may need on his vacation. The summer is bustling and cosmopolitan, as its harbor is filled with the colorful crowd that comes here from all over the world, often even from Hollywood!

Fiscardo, in ancient times, was called Panormos and was an important settlement, as evidenced by its very interesting archaeological finds that have not yet been completely uncovered and interpreted. Among the important antiquities of the village are the small theater, the cemetery and the bathhouse of the Roman era, as well as the ruins of the three-aisled Early Christian basilica of the 6th century AD Century. Another fabulous attraction of Fiskardo is the two stone lighthouses, the young and the old, at the entrance of the harbor, which are accessible by a nice walk overlooking the village. The older lighthouse, which is cylindrical and includes an independent house of the guardian, is a Venetian building of the 16th century. The next lighthouse next to it was built in 1892 and replaced the old one.

Fiscardo owes its current name to the Norman Crusader Robert Guiscard, who captured it in 1085 and died the same year on the island. Fiscardo also has Venetian buildings, but most of its buildings are from the 18th century and fully reflect the architecture of the time. Nikos Kavvadias, the famous Greek poet comes from Fiskardo whose father’s house is located on the picturesque stairs that start from the harbor and lead to the church of the village.

The port of Fiskardo is connected to daily routes with Ithaca and Lefkada. The village stretches out on successive bays, many of which end up on small beaches suitable for swimming, while in a very short distance and access by car are the excellent beaches of Foki and Emblissi. The other equally beautiful and nearby beaches , Kimila and Dafnoudi are accessible by open paths, while a short distance from the village of Manganos, the visitor can also take the road to the wonderful beaches of Saint Jerusalem and the Salamis. Many visitors choose to rent boats to explore not only these, but many more beautiful and green beaches that are only accessible by sea, and if lucky they can meet Monachus-Monachus seals and Caretta-Carreta turtles! The beaches of northern Kefalonia are all pebble, and several of them on their sides have flat rocks and beautiful natural shade from the trees that reach the sea!

Fiscardo has two museums worth visiting: the Naval and Environmental Museum, which is housed in the old elementary school and is very informative about the marine fauna of the Ionian Sea and the Museum of Olive, Wine and Bread located in the harbor. However, it is no exaggeration to say that Fiscardo as a whole is a living museum that links antiquity to today, revealing step by step the important stations of this long historical route!
