Drogarati Cave

There are many rare geological phenomena in the area of Sami. Of the 17 caves that have been recorded, the only two visitable are the Melissani lake and the cave of Drogarati, located in the village of Haliotata, at an altitude of 120 meters.

The Cave of Drogarati was discovered some 300 years ago, when a part of its roof fell as a result of an earthquake. This point is today his entry. The cave is open to the public since 1963.

The cave extends to 60 meters deep, but is estimated to be connected to other caves through tunnels, which have not yet been explored. The cave has two main spaces. The first is called Royal Balcony and is decorated with translucent stalactites. The second one is called the Dorm Hall and it is a very large room, as it has dimensions of 65 × 45 meters and a height of about 20 meters. The room temperature is constant at 18 degrees Celsius but the humidity is very high, reaching 90%. The whole cave is surrounded by countless stalactites and stalagmites of 100-150 million years old, which are still being created today! The stalactites grow about one centimetre every hundred years. Unfortunately, human intervention was not beneficial to the cave, as many stalactites are broken.

The configuration of the central hall of the cave is such that the space has excellent acoustics and can accommodate a crowd of people. Thus, in the cave of Drogarati, concerts are often organized that really enchant the listeners!

The cave is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm throughout the year. It is important to be careful as you walk into the cave as moisture creates slipperiness.
