Assos and Castle of Assos

Assos, along with its Castle, resemble an ornate jewel forged by nature, decorated by the people and thrown into the sea! There is no corner of this unique natural relief that does not surprise!

The settlement dates back to the 17th century, but its history is directly related to the history of the Castle. Already in 1576 the Venetians were worried about the protection of the northern part of Kefalonia and after much fermentation the implementation of the very ambitious plan for the creation of a fortress was established. Eventually, after a great effort, huge expenditures and personal work of the locals, between 1593 and 1595, walls of about 3000 meters were built, covering an area of 440 acres. However, water scarcity prevented farmers from settling in the Castle, and so even though a settlement was created, it was never numerically robust. In addition, it soon became obvious that due to the isolated point and the political correlations of the time, the Castle could not have strategic importance. So gradually the population of the seaside settlement began to rise while the fortress was reduced, with the exception of the period 1822-1865, when 1700 southern refugees were temporarily settled and the period from the late 1920s to 1953 when there were rural prisons. The last inhabitants left the Castle in the 1960s. The Castle is today well maintained, with its greatly preserved walls, the residence of the Venetian ruler and the military camps that were later used as prisons, as well as the church of Prophet Elias, built in the 18th century, in the place of a very ancient temple. What is very impressive is the vaulted gate of the Castle, which is preserved in a very good condition.

The village of Assos was hit by the earthquakes of 1953, but it was not destroyed, so it is a typical example of Venetian architecture, with the specifics of the area that, as it was intended to become the capital of the island, included such large mansions and large public buildings as well as farmhouses. The village has a full tourist reception with accommodation, taverns, cafes and gift shops. In the center of the village is a cute pebbly shallow beach, which is a pole of attraction especially for children, while its small harbor is a safe anchorage for tourist boats. Around Assos there are many excellent beaches with wild beauty that are only accessible by sea.
