Agia Efimia

Agia Efimia, is a picturesque seaside village and a tourist boat moor. It has been built on the bay between the mountains of Agia Dynati and Kallon Oros. The village was given its name from the homonymous white church of Agia Efimia which is located in the harbour. On July 11, the village celebrates with a great and impressive feast. After the devastating earthquakes of 1953, Agia Efimia as well as Livathos was “adopted” by the French Republic that helped to rebuild it.

The area was inhabited since antiquity, as Mycenaean walls have been identified, as well as traces of a Roman period villa. It seems that this area was a “conservator” of the northern part of the island, as on a hill near the village, in a location called Palatia, there were found traces of ancient fortifications that functioned as observation towers to and from the valley between the mountainous areas. This is testified by the very name of the area of Pylaros, which comes from the word “pylorus” and means “city guard”.

During your stay in Agia Efimia, you will not miss anything, as the village has full tourist facilities and caters to every visitor’s need by offering accommodation, dining and recreation, and has several shops. If you are a hobbyist, there are three hiking trails-paths mapped out with the Natura 2000 programme to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area. Also, as the inhabitants deal with tourism, livestock and cheese making, do not forget to try the local delicious products!
